Driving in Australia
The most important thing for foreign visitors to remember is that traffic stays on the left! Speeds are measured in kilometres per hour and distances in kilometres. Foreign licences can be used for up to three months, then visitors are required to pay a fee to get an Australian equivalent. Seatbelts are required by law and driving with a blood alcohol limit of higher than 0.05% is prohibited and carries penalties of fines, suspensions and possible imprisonment.Driving in the outback requires a little preparation! Civilisation can be sparse, so stock up on petrol and provisions when you get the chance. Avoid unsealed roads unless you have a 4WD rental and make sure you stay alert on the long, straight empty highways. But the roads of Newcastle are ready and waiting for you.
